Approaching the Design of a Commercial Space….
A well-designed commercial space can significantly boost a business's success. Whether it's a retail store, restaurant, or office, a thoughtful design can attract and retain customers or enhance employee productivity.
Getting into the mindset of the client says all for the attention to detail. The programming phase is crucial to getting successful results. Most people have opinions about what they like while others are looking for direction. It’s important to recognize both types of people and work together towards a common goal.
Design for Versatility
Ensure your space can adapt to changing needs by keeping the design flexible. Use modular elements and smart layouts that allow easy rearrangement of furniture and equipment. For example, airport cubicles are designed for quick customization and movement—this concept can be applied to any commercial space to allow for easy updates and adjustments.
Design with Technology
Modern commercial spaces must accommodate technology seamlessly. Include plans for telecommunication systems, computer networks, and media setups. Consider how digital controls and other tech elements can enhance the functionality and comfort of the space for customers, employees. In my career, I focused on things for versatility in technology, such as using a single quad outlets with a computer port in offices, mastered the zones of the audio system, integrated video often in a vertical format and located secure wifi ports in the ceilings of the space.
Offer Personalized Spaces
For customer-focused businesses like restaurants and hotels, providing personalized options can enhance the guest experience. Restaurants might offer various seating choices, such enclosed booths, linear tables for community seating, and lots of two tops for flexibility. (Did you know that a 21” x 29” size table will maximize seating?) Hotels can provide different room styles to match guest preferences.
Ensure Safety
Safety is crucial in commercial design and should not be sacrificed for style or functionality. Make sure your design includes all necessary safety features and complies with regulations. Prioritizing safety helps create a secure and trustworthy environment.
Retail Design
Retail design has the most compelling and rigorous requirements. You are not only designing for the client, but for the client’s customers. Eye catching designs are the most successful and draw the customer in and the product flow is crucial. Ever notice that a coffee shop has ‘grab and go’ at the checkout and when you first enter the shop. Restaurants are increasingly opening their kitchens
